A bent or curb-rashed rim is the most common reason a wheel leaks air.
Barrel
The barrel is the cylindrical body that runs between the two rim lips. It gives the wheel its width and shapes the mounting surfaces for the tire. Inside the barrel are two raised ridges called bead seats and a recessed channel called the drop center, which lets a technician slip the tire on and off during mounting.
Center bore (hub bore)
The center bore is the large hole in the middle of the wheel that slides over the hub of the vehicle. On factory wheels this hole is machined to match the hub exactly, which is called hub-centric mounting. That precise fit carries the vehicle’s weight and keeps the wheel running true, so an OEM wheel almost always rides smoother than a universal aftermarket one that relies on the lug nuts alone for centering.
Bolt holes and bolt pattern
The bolt holes are the circle of openings the lug nuts or bolts pass through. The number of holes and the diameter of the circle they form is the bolt pattern, written as something like 5×114.3 (five holes on a 114.3 mm circle). A wheel must match the vehicle’s bolt pattern exactly. It is one of the first specs we confirm before pairing any wheel with a car.
Mounting pad and lug seats
The mounting pad is the flat face behind the bolt holes that presses against the brake rotor and hub. Each bolt hole has a seat, usually conical or ball-shaped, that matches the lug nut so the wheel clamps down evenly. Mismatched lug seats are a frequent cause of loose wheels and vibration.
Spokes and face
The spokes are the arms that connect the center of the wheel to the outer rim, and together they form the face, which is the styled side you actually see. Spoke design is mostly cosmetic, but it also affects weight and brake cooling. A five-spoke alloy and a multi-spoke alloy of the same size can weigh noticeably different amounts.
Center cap
The center cap is the small cover that snaps into the middle of the wheel, hiding the hub and lug nuts and usually carrying the brand logo. It is a finishing piece, not a structural one, so a missing cap does not change how the wheel performs or what it is worth.
Valve stem and TPMS sensor
The valve stem is where you add air. On most vehicles built after 2007, the stem also houses a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) sensor that reports pressure to the dashboard. The sensor is a serviceable part that can be swapped or reprogrammed independently of the wheel, so it does not add or subtract value when a wheel changes hands.

- Condition of the rim and face matters most. Bends, cracks, and deep curb rash on the rim or spokes lower value because those parts are structural and cosmetic at once.
